Even today, Wales is one of the most rural parts of Britain. Go back a few hundred years and it really was frontier country - chapels were built where they could be accessed by farming communities, often high up in the mountains. Some may say they were put here to be nearer to God... many examples survive to this day. Often very isolated, but having a wonderful  sense of tranquillity.
